Bridge barriers often consist of rigid structures, such as reinforced concrete walls or metal rails mounted on concrete parapets. The exposed ends of these barriers can be hazardous to errant vehicles if not properly managed. To mitigate this risk, approach guardrails are commonly used to shield the exposed ends and prevent vehicle impacts.
Guardrails, being more flexible than the rigid bridge barriers, require a transition section when connecting to a more rigid structure. This transition ensures a smooth shift in stiffness from the semi-rigid W-Beam/Thrie-Beam barriers to the rigid bridge barriers.
The Ezy-Guard 4 and Ezy-Guard HC barriers are approved for use with the new ASBAP rigid transition. This updated transition, which replaces older NCHRP-350 designs, features a longer length and employs asymmetric transition panels and RHS blocks instead of C-section blocks.
